What makes a winning photo?<\/b><\/p>\n

When it comes to winners of photography competitions, professional or amateur, it\u2019s never certain who will make it and who won\u2019t. Certain photographs look like they\u2019re perfectly styled, as if they jumped out of a magazine, and yet it\u2019s almost as if they have no \u2018\u2019soul\u2019\u2019 or, as the French call it, \u2018\u2019je ne sais quoi.\u2019\u2019 Certain others look like they were the work of an amateur rather than a pro \u2013 the lighting isn\u2019t quite right, the exposure could have been less, or they don\u2019t follow the famous rule of thirds<\/a>. Rules aside, there are certain things that photographs that go on to win contests have in common:<\/p>\n

They\u2019re full of emotion<\/b>: A barefoot child selling flowers on an old dirt road, an old lady enjoying a glass of wine at the beach by herself, a family camping with their dogs\u2026. images that convey emotion, be it positive or negative, are strong images and they speak volumes to us.   2. They surprise us<\/b>: It might be the simplest scene on display but there might be some detail or accent about it that doesn\u2019t quite fit and it makes us wonder why it was there to begin with and what it could mean.
